Agriculture committee collects food
The Nansemond County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee collected several boxes of food and some cash donations during a food drive last week.
Committee members were at Tractor Supply on Pruden Boulevard on July 25, and donations also were collected at Tidewater Motorcycles.
“Doing a food drive is one of our service activities that we do every year,” said Beth Haywood with the women’s committee. “We decided to do this because people are in need right now, so we pushed it up. Usually, we do it in the fall.”
Haywood said the women’s committee also didn’t get to go to all of the elementary schools this year to read an agriculture-themed book. This year’s book was “PB&J Hooray!: Your Sandwich’s Amazing Journey from Farm to Table,” by Janet Nolan. The book traces the journey of all of the ingredients of bread, peanut butter and jelly from farms to factories to grocery stores and finally to the kitchen.
The women’s committee said they would likely still have a food drive in the fall.
